Life at Wizeline

A Tech Journey Filled with Passion and Value

A Tech Journey Filled with Passion and Value

My professional journey in the tech industry began in 2009 with software consulting. From a young age, I was passionate about technology—not so much about how it worked under the hood, but how it could deliver better user experiences. For instance, I clearly remember the first time iPhone hit the market, and as beautiful as it was for me, it was unthinkable that it didn’t have a friendly way to use a song as a ringtone. This perspective naturally led me to focus on software quality after completing my degree at Universidad de Guadalajara as a Software Engineer.

Early in my career, I gained diverse experience in software development, IT consulting, and even running my own PC repair business. These opportunities shaped my skills and mindset, eventually allowing me to tackle user experience challenges for my first official employer. My focus on software quality became the foundation of my career path. Quality Assurance allowed me to be involved not only in software development but also in defining how products are built with quality in mind.

Guadalajara and Wizeline – Ready for Its Close-Up

By 2017, Guadalajara had become a key tech hub for nearshore services, attracting global companies, and Wizeline stood out as a vibrant, innovative workplace. While I wasn’t actively seeking a change, Wizeline reached out in early 2018 with an opportunity to lead quality assurance for a key client project. During my onsite visit, I was immediately drawn to their culture of innovation and collaboration. Joining Wizeline as a QA Engineer was an easy decision.

From day one, I led the QA efforts for a high-impact project with Dow Jones. The fast-paced, collaborative environment pushed me to grow, and I became involved in broader initiatives such as creating career ladders, performance frameworks, and defining team roles.

Wizeline and QA Scale Up

As Wizeline grew, so did the QA practice—scaling from three engineers to more than 180 in just three years. This rapid growth presented new leadership opportunities, and I was proud to become the leader of the QA practice when it started growing.

We were 18 QAs when I started as practice leader. Leading the practice was not easy, to be honest. We needed to distinguish our differentiators from other competitors, but at the same time, we had to grow fast. One big struggle of fast-growing organizations is preserving culture and rapidly onboarding new people. At one point, we were growing at a pace of 20 – 30 people a month. In comparison, in the early years, we hired less than that in an entire year. These new challenges pushed me to look for new ways to do things and improve our Wizeline way.

Over time, my responsibilities expanded as Wizeline opened new markets like Colombia and Spain, allowing me to help establish global, multicultural teams. This experience, combined with a focus on quality and operational excellence, prepared me to take on broader leadership roles. I transitioned to Director, then Sr. Director, overseeing both QA and SRE practices by the end of 2023 and part of 2024.

When talking to my team about my experiences in the last seven years, I normally focus on the following things that I believe helped me along the way, or as I remind my staff, remember to VALUE the ABCs:

Focus on V.A.L.U.E and ABC

  • Vision: Aligning your vision with the vision of those around you.
  • Attitude: Understanding that attitude to face problems matters – you can be part of the solution or part of the problem.
  • Leverage: Use the tools available to you to succeed, they are there for you, don’t reinvent the wheel.
  • Unity: Work through your team – you are all here for the same objective.
  • Effectiveness: Establish a continuous improvement flow. What do you do today, even if you are the most efficient at it? What is the best way to do it? –  Peter Drucker said, “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”

On the other hand – Focus on ABC, and that for me is the cheatsheet to show value – Act, Build and Communicate what is built. You need to show you are valuable. You are your best promoter.

In recognition of my contributions, mid 2024, I was entrusted with the role of VP of Technology. Today, I lead technology practices and communities at Wizeline, driving innovation, growth, and exceptional user experiences.

For me, it is clear that the best is yet to come. You should be the driver of your own destiny. Life comes through you, not at you. Technology innovation never stops, so let’s enjoy the ride.
